On January 29, history was made in a “big” way when Maxxzandra Ford gave birth to her third son Avery, weighing in at a whopping 14.1 pounds, quickly making baby Avery the heaviest infant at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa, as well as one of the largest babies in the United States.
According to Ford, she was unaware she was pregnant until her 35th week of pregnancy, late into her third trimester, only realizing she was pregnant, after being prompted to take a pregnancy test by her husband.
According to Ford’s doctor, “She knew she gained a lot of weight and thought she might be having twins because she was a twin,” remarked Nancy Gay, spokeswoman from the St. Joseph’s Hospital who was familiar with Ford’s pregnancy.
While the average baby in the U.S. weighs anywhere from seven to eight pounds, during Fords ultrasound she was told her baby would be closer to 10 pounds, putting it well above the average weight of a new-born pre-birth.
Recalling the pregnancy in an interview with TIME, Ford remarked, “Before I knew it, he was already coming out, it was too late to turn back. I was like ‘oh my goodness’ and they were like, ‘stop pushing, stop pushing’”.
All in all, it took nearly 18 hours for Ford to deliver baby Avery, the third in a line of plus sized-babies with Fords’ previous children weighing in at nine and ten pounds at birth.
According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby who survived pregnancy, the largest tragically dying 11 hours after birth, weighed in at 10.2 kg or 22 lb and was born in Italy in September of 1955.
